This session provides an overview on understanding historical and systemic factors that contribute to ongoing disparities in educational outcomes for black and brown students/students of color.  Participants are invited to increase their awareness of the complexity of underlying and, in many cases, unintentional forces impeding academic and behavioral progress.  This session promotes the creation of safe spaces for difficult conversations while offering direct actions to improve equity from practice, procedure, and policy perspectives.  Participants will deepen their understanding of how intentional actions in asset development around having positive individual connections, feeling valued by their community, receiving encouragement in school, and having a positive cultural identity contribute to a richer educational experience for all students.
